Church holidays 2017

Church holidays on 2017 year

Orthodox Church holidays are church-wide celebrations in Orthodoxy, dedicated to the special recollection of alternating sacred events and honored saints. The days of their celebration refer to the annual (immobile and mobile) and week-long liturgical circles of public worship in the Orthodox Church. Each day of the calendar year is dedicated to the Church's memory of a sacred event, the celebration of the memory of the saints or the glorification of the miraculous icons of the Blessed Virgin. Orthodox Christians must sacredly honor their holidays, prepare for them in advance with prayer and fasting, during the holidays, visit the church and receive communion, instead of their domestic work, help the weak and needy.

Holidays are distributed within two overlapping annual cycles - fixed (mined) and mobile (triode, or Easter-Pentecostal). Celebrations and memorable events of the first cycle are strictly fixed only by the numbers of the month (for the dates of the Julian calendar in relation to the modern civilian, an amendment is necessary: n - 13 days, - for the XX-XXI centuries). Holidays of the second are fixed only on the days of the week, being rigidly correlated with Easter, which is the starting point for the entire mobile annual cycle. The date of the latter is moved within 35 days ("Easter limits"): from April 4 (March 22 under art.) - until May 8 (April 25 st.).

The most important holidays of the modern Orthodox calendar are called "Twelve", or "Twelve" (from Slavic twelve to "twelve") (see Twelve Holidays). Easter, as the "Feast of the Feast," resides outside this classification. The second step in the festive hierarchical ladder is occupied by the holidays, which are called "great" in the liturgical word usage.

Common for all Christians holidays - above all Easter and Christmas (the latter, as a special calendar celebration, has no Armenian and other monophysite churches). The most important annual holidays are basically the same for Orthodox and Catholics (because they are based on the same events of sacred history), but differ in dates, often with names and semantic nuances, and with the nature of the commission.
